“I’m just savoring the taste is all, like I said, it’s really good.” Kiichi smiled, “I’m glad you brought me here.”
“Oh. Well that’s kinda weird, but okay,” Ren shrugged, taking another bite. “You’re welcome.”
“Well it’s not the first time I’ve been called weird. I mean, how I dress is enough to earn that name right?” Kiichi chuckled. He liked the way he dressed, but he was aware that it was a little weird, but he didn’t care.
“Yeah,” Ren nodded, “I don’t doubt that.” He took a sip of his drink. “Why do you dress like that anyways? I mean, that’s the kind of shit that gets you beat up.”
“it’s just what I like.” Kiichi shrugged, “Sooner or later they’ll know how much I like trains, and I figure this way, they can tell right from the start. If they beat me up, then I don’t want to be their friends anyway. Besides my dad worked with trains his whole life and I wanted to be just like him. He used to let me blow the whistle sometimes when he took me to work with him.”
He held up the whistle he wore around his neck, “Got me this too.”
Ren tilted his head to the side a little and raised a brow. “But… don’t you want to avoid that, kids knowing your weird interests? Your dad sounds, uh…. cool by the way.”
He looked at the whistle for a moment, a few thoughts crossing his mind. He didn’t want to be too forward in case his suspicions were wrong, so he just asked, “So what was your dad like?”
“I figure a real friend will like me even if they know my weird interests. That’s how I know they’re worth keeping and that I can trust them. That’s why I dress like this.” Kiichi smiled.
“And thanks, he really was. He used to drive the steam locomotives when he and mom first met. They actually met because she was taking a train to visit her folks and he though she was pretty and showed her around the train. It’s kind of embarrassing but my dad told me I was conceived on a train and that’s when he knew I would be growing up like him.” Kiichi blushed, “He was always so cool, I kind of miss him sometimes.”
“Huh…”
Ren thought on that while Kiichi started talking about his dad (He almost choked on his pizza about the “conceived on a train” part). His suspicions seemed to be pretty much confirmed, but now he was feeling a little awkward. What do you even say to that? “He uh… Um… I’m sorry..”
